Get Smart (the car that is...)

smart cars
The US is about to get the ultimate urban assault vehicle - not a new Hummer, the two seat Mercedes-built SMART car. SMART gets about 40 mpg, is made of most mostly recyclable materials and is the world's lowest CO2 emitting car.
Last night I attended a SMART car launch event in Hawaii thanks to EVehicles Hawaii. Judging by the fashionista-heavy attendee list, SMART may become Waikiki's latest must-have urban fashion statement.

Not surprising as SMART's unique combination of sophisticated style, Mercedes build quality & practicality has 1,000,000 SMARTs littering cities like Paris, Milan and Sydney, and chic resorts like St. Tropez. And for just $12,000 you can drive one of just five cars in the the NY Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection.

At under nine feet long, you can legally park sideways. Or put two in your one condo parking space. They are a hoot to drive but although they can reach 90 mph, they are not highway cruisers.

The SMART is HUGE inside (for two - even if you are 6' 4") with perhaps the world's most spacious dashboard & (optional) clear roof making it seem even bigger. And, natch, it has smart options like Bluetooth phone integration. The recyclable plastic body panels are unscratchable and if you get bored with the color, you can unsnap (!) & change them.

SMART also has a host of active safety features including electronic stability control, ABS, plus a rigid steel "tridion" safety cell that absorbs impact. Check this video of a SMART hitting a concrete barrier at 70 mph... Don't try this at home.

If you think this is SMART, you may want to reserve one for $99.
