Of gas tax holidays...

Recently, Presidential candidates McCain and Clinton proposed cutting the 18.4¢ federal gas tax in response to high oil prices.

This is wrong for several reasons - here’s why, and here’s how to save on gas anyway...
Cutting gas tax cuts billions of $ from needed maintenance to our highways and bridges.

Second, cutting gas taxes increases driving thereby increasing our oil consumption and further increasing oil price. The oil companies and foreign oil producers win, not us.

OK, but how can I save on gas without changing cars?

1. Inflate your tires to recommended pressures. Mileage increase: 3-4%
2. Don't use premium gas if your car doesn't require it. The octane requirement is printed on the driver’s door pillar. 5 - 10% savings.
3. Don't drive above the speed limit. Wind drag increases exponentially above 60 mph. Savings: 5%
4. Replace your air filter and change the oil. Cost: $35 Savings: 3-4% (and your car will last longer.)
5. Combine trips - shop on your way home from work.
6. Carpool, bus or ride a bike when you can.
